Early Life
François pinault was born in Toulon, France on June 27, 1950. He began studying law at the University of Toulon. However, he dropped out shortly after graduating from the university to pursue a career in the fashion industry. After an internship working for French designer Jacques Fath, Pinault joined the textile company Langnesse in 1971 as a buyer. From there he would move to Hermès as a buyer and then as a director for several years before becoming CEO of Yves Saint Laurent’s holding company Lanvin’s international division in 1990.
Career
Pinault officially began working for LVMH in 1991, when he was hired as an executive at the company’s luxury goods holding company Cetim. Around this time, he also became a director of Yves Saint Laurent, where he served as CEO from 1992 to 1995. He was promoted to the position of vice chairman in 1997 and then chairman in 1998. In 2005 Pinault was named chairman and CEO of Kering, the parent company.

Pinault married actress Salma Hayek in 1998 after the two met at a dinner hosted by designer Tom Ford. He has four children from his first marriage to actress Gilles Deyda, to who he was married from 1973 to 1984. In 2016 Pinault was elected president of the Foundation for charity in France.
