When you picture a romantic getaway, chances are a sandy beach, clinking wine glasses, and sunsets spring to mind. While there’s nothing wrong with those classics, sometimes it’s worth stepping away from the usual itinerary and trying something a little unexpected. A different type of break will give you the chance to experience something new together, create memories that will last a lifetime, and you know neither of you will have done it with someone else previously.
There are so many different types of breaks that you can do, and they will seem obvious once you start researching them. A Camino de Santiago is something a lot of people haven’t tried, but it can be very romantic, considering you get to spend many hours together hiking and exploring new landscapes and terrains. Then there is a cruise holiday, something a lot of people consider for old people, when in actual fact it’s the opposite. You could also do a digital detox retreat, where you don’t have your phones, only each other’s company.
Below, we have put together a guide on three types of couple breaks you may not have thought of, but may want to try.

Hiking holiday
Hiking is perfect for couples! When going on a hiking holiday (such as a Camino de Santiago), you will enjoy countless hours on foot, exploring and catching up. You can have meaningful conversations, funny conversations as well as romantic conversations, whilst enjoying the beautiful landscapes in front of you. The best thing about hiking is that you don’t have the distractions of everyday life. You can leave your phone in your bag and be in the present moment – something that a lot of couples benefit from.
Digital detox retreat
Modern life can make it hard to switch off – literally. A digital detox retreat is the perfect way to reconnect without constant notifications, emails, and “just one more” Instagram scroll. These retreats often combine mindfulness, nature, and activities like yoga, hiking, or journaling. With no phones to distract you, conversations deepen, silences feel more comfortable, and you truly notice each other. Whether it’s a rustic eco-lodge in the mountains or a lakeside cabin with zero Wi-Fi, the absence of tech can help you rediscover the presence you may not even realise you’d been missing.
Cruising
Many people consider cruising an old person’s holiday, when in actual fact it’s the opposite. With modern-day tech being added to ships, cruise lines have transformed their cruise ships to be a modern-day luxurious break. They have so much on board, which caters for everyone. This includes restaurants, bars, water parks, sports courts, cinemas, shops, shows and more. As a couple, you can be romantically enjoying a cocktail as the sun sets, whilst you watch your ship leave the dock. You can then wake up in the morning and enjoy breakfast on your balcony as you arrive at a new port.
